Ricki Lake Headed for Divorce

Two years after marrying second husband Christian Evans, it looks like Ricki Lake is headed for divorce.

Legal Separation and Divorce Filing

On October 9, the 47-year-old former talk show host filed for legal separation from Evans, 42. Lake filed divorce papers just a week later, citing irreconcilable differences. Because California is a “no fault” state, guilt is not assigned to either party in a dissolution of marriage. Citing “irreconcilable differences” means that two married people cannot (and will never) agree on basic and fundamental issues involving the marriage or family, and thus is considered grounds for a dissolution of marriage, also called a divorce.

Spousal Support

Reportedly, Lake has agreed to pay Evans, a jewelry designer, spousal support. At this point it is unclear how much that amount will be. Spousal support is in place to allow for a spouse to maintain the standard of living they were used to during the marriage. Spousal support laws are in place to prevent a spouse from suffering a decrease in this standard of living since often times one spouse is untrained, or has been out of the workforce for such a long time that it would be difficult for them to quickly obtain a job after a marriage has been dissolved.

Lake in Good Spirits Despite Divorce

Lake seems to be in good spirits since filing for divorce, recently tweeting, “One of the only good things about heartbreak.. The lbs that are lost. This #shapeshifter has gone in the other direction. #thankful.”

Back in 2011, Lake said, “I’m happier than I’ve ever been, [Christian’s] a normal guy. We met through my best friend … He’s a nobody but he’s somebody to me. He’s everything to me.”

This is the star’s second divorce. She has two children, Milo and Owen, from her first marriage to illustrator Rob Sussman.
