Husband in 'Sister Wives' Divorces One Wife

TLC’s Sister Wives are facing a big shake-up, and one that might seem to come out of left-field:divorce. But not because the marriage is ending!

Divorce to Re-Marry

Kody Brown, the husband of Janelle, Christine, Meri, and Robyn, has confirmed that he is divorcing one of his wives in order to marry another. Previously, Brown was legally married to Meri, but still referred to Janelle, Christine, and Robyn his wives. He has now divorced Meri in order to be able to marry Robyn. She’s the youngest sister wife in the group.

Restructuring Family

“We have chosen to legally restructure our family,” said the Brown family. “We made this decision together as a family. We are grateful to our family, friends and fans for all their love and support.”

Neither Brown nor TLC has explained why the family decided to move forward with a divorce, it has been suggested that it was done in order to provide Robyn’s three kids from a previous marriage with more financial security.

Between the wives there are 17 children in the family.

Free to Walk Away

Brown has said that the plural marriage the family practices is similar to other marriages and that all of his four wives are able to walk away from the relationship at any point. In 2013 he told Today, “We chose to be married. Nobody forced us to do this, and we choose to stay in it out of love and commitment. Just like any marriage. I hate to say it, because I don’t like divorce -– nobody likes that –- but my wives are free to leave, if they make that choice.”
